The journey of self-discovery through travel: A personal narrative
Traveling is often seen as a thrilling adventure, a chance to explore new places and immerse oneself in different cultures. But for many, it can also be a deeply personal and transformative experience. In this article, I, Molly Hunt, an artist and journalist from the Kimberley in Western Australia, share my own journey of self-discovery through travel, and how it shaped my perspective on life and the world.
The fear of the unknown
For me, the idea of traveling overseas was always daunting. Despite having seen a lot of my home country, I was always held back by an underlying fear of the unknown. Work commitments, money, and timing were just some of the excuses I used to avoid taking the leap. But deep down, it was a quiet, deep insecurity that sat beneath everything. It wasn't just about travel; it was about identity.
The turning point
Last year, however, was a turning point. I was ready to open myself up to the world. It was a work opportunity that led to my first overseas trip. I was invited by The Museum of World Culture to contribute to an exhibition in Gothenburg, Sweden. This felt more than an opportunity; it felt like a responsibility to carry something with me and honor where I come from.
A second coming-of-age
Around the same time, I had been going through what felt like a second coming of age. It wasn't the kind you have in your teens, full of firsts and figuring things out for the first time. Instead, it was a quieter, deeper one. I had recently been through a heartbreaking separation that tore parts of me, but that pain forced me to confront a truth: I had been trying to make something work that no longer aligned with who I was becoming.
The power of travel
My fear of travel kept me at home, but after what I had been through, I felt almost fearless. Before leaving my town of Kununurra, I set some intentions: have a good attitude, lead with kindness, don't carry assumptions, and don't overthink it. Just go and meet whatever is there.
What surprised me most about traveling overseas was how quickly the unfamiliar became familiar. At first, everything felt different - the cold, the language, the rhythm of life. But the people were still people. Kindness, laughter, and connection all translated. It wasn't as intimidating as I had imagined.
The transformative power of travel
This trip taught me that I can go anywhere in the world and experience joy, friendships, romances, career opportunities, and the simple pleasure of discovering something new. It was a moment of clarity and self-discovery that I will never forget. Back home in the Kimberley, my feet pressed into the red dirt, the smell of bushfire in the air, I think about Sweden and the frozen lake. Two completely different worlds, but both I am now familiar with, and I can't wait to explore more.
In my opinion, travel is not just about seeing new places; it's about seeing yourself in new places. It's about challenging your assumptions, expanding your horizons, and discovering the world through the lens of your own identity. It's about embracing the unknown and finding the familiar in the unfamiliar. And it's about the journey of self-discovery that unfolds along the way.
